In Cartagena, a port of cultures, you will come to discover a history shaped by many civilizations, including the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Arabs and the Spanish. This city in the region of Murcia (about 50 km from the apartment) stands out thanks to its strategic location in the western Mediterranean, and the sea here still symbolizes the rich heritage of civilizations, traditions and the Spanish navy.
When visiting Cartagena, you must not miss exploring its historic center, called Casco Antiguo (Old Town), which is spread between the five hills of Monte de la Concepción, Molinete, Monte Sacro, San José and Despeňaperros. This area includes the Punic Walls, Aguirre Palace, Bullring, Roman Museum, Roman Theater, University Quarter, City Hall and elegant Art Nouveau villas from the early 20th century. From the viewpoint at Concepción Castle, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the entire city and the port.
The Roman theater, carved directly into the rock, is one of the most important architectural gems, which for two hundred years served as a theater space for six thousand spectators. Over time, it turned into a market and later into a residential area, which was created on the stage and in the auditorium.
Cartagena is home to the regional headquarters of the Spanish Navy, and the vessels here also form part of the Maritime Museum exhibit, where you can admire the Peral, the first submarine powered by an electric battery.
You will also enjoy the wide palm-lined Paseo Alfonso XII promenade, which offers a variety of restaurants and beautiful views of the harbor.
